Audio / Hands-on comparison

AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3:
Which would I buy?

Both sound good. But after using both pairs, fit and noise cancellation are what keep bringing me back to AirPods Pro 3.

The quick answer

I would buy AirPods Pro 3.

They fit my ears better, block more noise, and have the sound I prefer. AirPods 5 still make sense if you dislike silicone tips or want to spend less. I would choose the standard AirPods 5 over the more expensive wireless-charging version unless those extra convenience features matter to you.

The open fit and smaller case are part of the appeal. The fit itself was my biggest complaint.

The sealed fit is more secure for me and helps make the noise cancellation more useful.

What this comparison is based on

This is based on my experience with both pairs for my video reviews: listening to music and spoken audio, checking noise cancellation, trying the fit during everyday use, and using the controls and iPhone settings.

My Pro 3 review also includes indoor and busy-street microphone samples. I have not assigned a microphone winner here or treated published battery ratings as measured results. You can watch the original reviews below to hear the samples and see the products in use.

The first decision

Fit and comfort: open earbuds or a sealed fit?

AirPods 5 have no silicone tips. If you dislike the feeling of something sealing your ear canal, that is a real reason to consider them. The problem for me was that they felt loose and sometimes worked their way out. I kept noticing the lack of a seal.

AirPods Pro 3 felt better in my ears. The medium tips worked for me, and I wore them for up to four hours comfortably. They were more secure, but they were not perfect: the left earbud occasionally loosened when I moved around.

So this is not a promise that Pro 3 will fit everyone better. It is why I prefer them. If the open AirPods shape already works well for your ears, your buying decision may be different.

Fit affects more than comfort: it also changes how secure the earbuds feel during normal use.

Sound quality: closer in a quiet room than I expected

AirPods 5 sound very good. In a quiet room, they sounded surprisingly similar to Pro 3. If sound quality were the only thing I considered, I would have been satisfied with them.

The AirPods 5 tuning was a little bass-heavy for my taste. I still preferred the overall balance and more controlled bass of Pro 3, but I would not dismiss AirPods 5 just because they cost less or have an open fit.

The sound was not my biggest problem with AirPods 5. The fit was.

That distinction matters. Someone who likes the open fit may enjoy AirPods 5 without feeling the need to spend more. For me, good sound alone did not outweigh the fit and noise-cancellation differences.

AirPods 5 (left) and Pro 3 (right). I liked the sound of both; the sealed fit was a bigger factor in my choice.

The biggest performance difference

Noise cancellation: listen quietly and the gap becomes clear

AirPods 5 reduce background noise, which is useful for an earbud without a silicone seal. But in my use, they generally lowered the noise rather than making it disappear.

I noticed the limitation most when listening to a podcast or playing music at low volume. More of the room still came through. If that is how you listen, the difference matters more than it might when music is covering the remaining noise.

Pro 3 were much stronger for me. One example from my review: I could sit on the couch reading while the kids watched a movie without being distracted by the television. That is a more useful benefit to me than another feature buried in the settings.

If blocking distractions is one of the main reasons you are buying earbuds, I would spend more for Pro 3. If you mainly want to take the edge off background noise while keeping the open fit, AirPods 5 have a clearer role.

Transparency: hearing the room without removing the earbuds

Transparency worked well on AirPods 5. Their open design already lets surrounding sound reach your ears, so hearing the room is part of the experience.

Pro 3 also have convincing transparency. Voices sounded natural to me, and I could keep the sealed fit while letting outside sound through. That gives me the flexibility to move between stronger noise isolation and hearing what is around me.

I would not pick a winner based on transparency alone. Fit and the amount of noise you want to block make the bigger difference in this comparison.

Controls and charging case: convenience has a fit tradeoff

I liked the smaller AirPods 5 charging case. It is easy to pocket, and that is a benefit you notice every day rather than only when you open a settings menu.

The volume swipe on the wireless-charging AirPods 5 worked reliably. The catch was that swiping could loosen the earbud, so I would need to push it back into place. A control can work correctly and still be annoying if the fit does not stay put.

At the prices discussed in my review, the more expensive version added wireless charging, volume swipe and longer battery life. I would pay extra only if those conveniences mattered to me. They would not solve my main complaint about the earbuds.

Apple features: what actually influenced my choice?

Both pairs are convenient with an iPhone. With AirPods 5, I tried features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, translation and head gestures, but I did not use every smart feature regularly.

That is why I would not choose between these pairs by counting features. The things I noticed most were how they fit, how they sounded, and how much noise they blocked.

I also use a Windows PC. In my Pro 3 review, switching outside Apple's ecosystem was a limitation: there was no true multipoint connection with my Windows PC, and switching was manual. If you regularly move between Apple and other platforms, read the full review before making Apple integration your main buying reason.

Price and value: when is Pro 3 worth the extra money?

The prices I discussed in my AirPods 5 review were $129 for the standard version and $149 for the wireless-charging version. Pro 3 were around $199 at the time. Those are review-time prices, not current offers.

At those prices, the standard AirPods 5 saved $70 compared with Pro 3. The wireless-charging version saved $50. That smaller gap made the more expensive AirPods 5 harder for me to recommend, because I would rather put the extra money toward the Pro fit and noise cancellation.

But that advice assumes you are happy with silicone tips. If you specifically want an open earbud, spending more on a sealed pair may not give you the experience you want. Choose the fit first, then compare the price.

For my ears and the way I listen, I still choose Pro 3. If your current earbuds already fit well and do everything you need, neither of these is a reason to upgrade just to have the newest model.

Common questions

Do AirPods 5 sound as good as AirPods Pro 3?

In a quiet room, I found them surprisingly similar. AirPods 5 sounded very good, although I still preferred the balance and controlled bass of Pro 3. Fit and ANC were bigger reasons for my choice.

Which pair is better for podcasts?

If I am listening quietly and want fewer distractions, I choose Pro 3. AirPods 5 let more of the room through in my low-volume and podcast listening.

Are AirPods 5 better if I dislike ear tips?

They are the pair I would consider first for that preference. They do not use silicone tips, but you still need the open shape to fit your ears securely. They were loose in mine.

Would you buy the standard or wireless-charging AirPods 5?

At the prices discussed in my review, I would buy the standard $129 version. I would spend the additional $20 only if wireless charging, on-stem volume control and longer battery life mattered to me.

Is AirPods Pro 3 worth paying more for?

For me, yes: I prefer the fit, stronger ANC and sound. For someone who dislikes a sealed fit or mainly wants a lower-cost open earbud, AirPods 5 may make more sense.
